Heroic rescuers: Car lifts woman and toddler out of danger!

Two serious traffic accidents recently occurred in Stuttgart, drawing public attention to the safety situation in road traffic. On Thursday, 34-year-old Yvonne L. was hit by a car with her two-year-old son in a stroller while she was trying to cross the street. The accident occurred when she heard a loud bang and reflexively pushed the buggy away but was unable to escape in time. Yvonne L. was crushed under a Seat Alhambra that weighed almost two tons. Passers-by, including Bashaar Maho and Mehmet Akpinar, rushed to help and after about five minutes managed to lift the car and free the woman. She suffered a ruptured liver, two broken ribs and several abrasions, while her son fortunately remained almost unharmed. The 23-year-old driver of the vehicle is being investigated for negligent bodily harm. There have been four similar incidents at the intersection where the accident occurred in the past 12 months. Akpinar then called on the city of Stuttgart to set up a zebra crossing at this danger point in order to increase pedestrian safety. [Image] reports that the combination of increasing traffic and inadequate safety measures on the roads is a major problem.

In another incident on Friday evening, a 42-year-old driver drove a Mercedes G-Class into a crowd of people at a bus stop, resulting in a tragic collision. A 46-year-old woman died from her injuries, while another eight people, including five children, were injured. The police arrested the driver at the scene; he is being investigated for negligent homicide and negligent bodily harm, but is at large. The incident caused major traffic disruptions and necessitated a full investigation. Peter Erben from the FUSS e.V. association was critical of the traffic flow at this point and described it as dangerous for pedestrians. [Voice] reports that a tip portal has been set up to interview possible witnesses to the accident.

More and more people are injured in road traffic

The increasing number of traffic accidents is alarming. According to the German Road Safety Council (DVR), 2,839 people in Germany died in traffic accidents in 2023 - an increase of 1.8% compared to the previous year. The number of injuries also rose by 1.5% to 366,557 people. The sharp increase in the number of injured and killed pedestrians is particularly alarming. Manfred Wirsch, President of the DVR, calls for greater consideration of pedestrian safety in traffic policy, in particular through the amendment to the Road Traffic Regulations (StVO), which, among other things, is intended to enable the arrangement of zebra crossings without proof of a special risk situation. [DVR] emphasizes that urgent measures are needed to improve road safety.
