Water withdrawal is prohibited in the Rems-Murr district: Extreme drought prevails!

Due to extreme drought, the Rems-Murr district has issued a general decree that immediately prohibits the abstraction of water from all above-ground bodies of water. This measure comes into force after water levels in the region have fallen worryingly since February 2025 and weather forecasts show no positive change in sight. The order, which was issued on July 3, 2025, is initially valid until September 30, 2025. Even the smallest withdrawal of water with a watering can or bucket is now prohibited, which greatly affects the local population. Only people with a permit under water law are exempt from this regulation, but under strict conditions. Violations can result in fines of up to 50,000 euros. These measures are necessary to protect the ecological balance, as rising water temperatures and falling oxygen levels create dangerous conditions for the inhabitants of the waters.

For agriculture and commercial users, water withdrawal remains permitted for the time being, but it cannot be ruled out that additional restrictions could follow if water levels continue to fall. Information about this is available on the district office's website and at the state's low water information center. Citizens who have questions or uncertainties can also contact the Office for Environmental Protection directly.

Technological change in agriculture

The possible uses of AI in agriculture are diverse:

Despite these advances, there are challenges: The high acquisition costs of these technologies represent an obstacle, especially for small businesses. In addition, AI does not replace the specialist knowledge of farmers, but rather supports them with precise data. The farmers' association recognizes the potential of AI, but also warns about its susceptibility to errors in practical use. The complexity of the new technology requires extensive training, so machine rings often rely on shared use to cover costs.
