Hammer attack on the ICE: Four injured and dramatic scenes in Straßkirchen!

On the afternoon of July 3, 2025, a disturbing incident occurred on an Intercity Express (ICE) on the route from Hamburg to Vienna. While the train was carrying around 500 passengers, a 20-year-old Syrian man attacked his fellow passengers with a hammer. The attack occurred around 1:55 p.m. on the route between Straubing and Plattling, in the Straßkirchen area in the Straubing-Bogen district. A total of four people were injured, including the alleged perpetrator himself, who suffered more serious injuries and is now under police custody. Fortunately, none of the injured are in mortal danger and the injuries are classified as mild to moderate, reports zvw.de.

The injured come from different age groups: three of the four affected are also Syrian nationals aged 15, 24, 38 and 51. The police announced that the initially unclear background to the attack is currently being investigated. There is varying information about how the passengers managed to overpower the attacker. There are indications that passengers or possibly a member of the Bundeswehr intervened to bring the situation under control, as br.de reports.

Rescue workers on duty

After the incident, emergency services were alerted at around 2:00 p.m. after several passengers activated the emergency stop. The fire brigade, police and rescue services were immediately deployed. The ICE had to be temporarily blocked. Uninjured passengers were able to travel with one of the train parts to the train station in Straßkirchen. A care center was set up in a gymnasium for the passengers who were directly affected. Psychosocial emergency care and support services are available there to provide support to potentially traumatized passengers.

In a public statement, Deutsche Bahn expressed its sympathy for those affected and thanked the emergency services who reacted quickly and arrested the attacker. In the current situation, the police emphasize that there is no acute danger to the general public. Nevertheless, the railway line remains closed for the time being, and the exact resumption of rail traffic has not yet been determined, as zvw.de and br.de report.
