Lunch as a ray of hope: Miedelsbach is fighting after the flood!
The flood disaster in Miedelsbach hit the community hard and left clear traces. On June 2, 2024, there was a devastating flood caused by persistent rain in southern Germany. The situation escalated on Sunday evening when the water level of the Tannbach, which is normally less than a meter high, suddenly rose dramatically. Residents initially felt safe and assumed that the worst was over. But within 15 minutes the water was already 1.50 meters high in garages and ground floors, causing extensive damage to the town center. Roads were devastated and cars weighing tons were displaced. Tragically, two people died: a 58-year-old resident and his 84-year-old mother, who were found in a pumped-out basement. While they tried to pump water out of their basement on Sunday evening, they were caught in the floodwaters, which spread inexorably through the rooms. Firefighters had to make their own way to safety, with some taking refuge on vehicle roofs to escape the threatening water. After this dramatic event, the German Weather Service lifted the severe weather warning for all of Baden-Württemberg and ended the continuous rain situation.
As a result, the community of Miedelsbach was under great strain. Pastor Raphael Fauth set up a lunch table to offer those affected a point of contact and support. Many volunteers joined him to help those in need. This initiative quickly became an important point of contact for people struggling with the consequences of the flood. In the weeks following the disaster, residents had to clear out their basements and dispose of personal belongings. The exhaustion was both physically and mentally stressful, especially since many households had no electricity for cooking and no hot water for showers.
Important support and cohesion
The lunch table in Miedelsbach played a central role for the community by not only providing culinary supplies, but also creating a space in which people could exchange ideas and support each other. The months-long effort to provide aid and restore infrastructure will continue for a long time. In this difficult time, the solidarity of the population is crucial in order to heal the wounds of this tragedy and restore the quality of life in Miedelsbach.
The devastating flood not only caused material damage, but also made the humanity and willingness to help in the community visible. The commitment of the volunteers and the initiatives such as the lunch are signs of solidarity in a crisis that has had a lasting impact on people. Rebuilding the community and strengthening social cohesion will therefore be of great importance in the coming months.
