Schönau celebrates 200 years of Waltz King Johann Strauss with a ceremony!

June 14, 2025 marked the 200th anniversary of the birth of Johann Strauss' son, an occasion that was celebrated with a special commemorative event in Schönau an der Triesting. The celebration took place in the villa of Alexander and Ursula Korb-Weidenheim, which was once purchased by the “Red Archduchess” Elisabeth Petznek. This villa was owned by the famous Waltz King from 1880 to 1894, who spent numerous summers there and also composed some of his most famous works.

Parts of the operettas “One Night in Venice”, “The Gypsy Baron” and “The Kiss Waltz” were created in the villa. The guest of honor at the event was Prof. Dr. Eduard Strauss, the great-grandnephew of Johann Strauss and head of the Vienna Institute for Strauss Research. In his speech, Prof. Dr. Strauss emphasized the importance of Johann Strauss's father for his son's success. This connection between father and son was the theme of the evening.

A successful evening in Schönau

The second stop of the evening was Schönau Palace, which also belonged to Archduchess Elisabeth from 1911 to 1929. Michael Kremsner organized the event in the castle, where a musical highlight awaited the guests. The “Vienna Ladies Orchestra Johann Strauss” played works such as “Roses from the South”, “Lagoon Waltz” and the “Bridal Show Polka”. Moderated by Ruth Müller, the ensemble made connections between the themes of the songs and the life of Johann Strauss.

The celebrations are part of a larger festival program honoring the 200th birthday of Johann Strauss II in 2025 as part of the Strauss Charity Arts Festival in Vienna. This festival not only celebrates the timeless compositions of “Waltz King”, but also supports the mission of the United Nations Women’s Guild Vienna (UNWG), which is committed to child welfare projects worldwide. The festival uses music as a universal language, promoting cultural connections and generosity.

The Strauss Charity Arts Festival not only honors the artistic legacy of Johann Strauss, but also puts it at the service of a good cause. In this way, music becomes a tool that can help inspire and support communities and children. The numerous events and concerts surrounding Strauss' 200th birthday provide an excellent platform to both celebrate his legacy and support important social initiatives.
