Racing cyclist in Kirchdorf: hit by car and dragged along!

An unfortunate incident occurred in the Biberach district on Friday when a 42-year-old racing cyclist was hit by a car and dragged along. The accident occurred in the municipality of Kirchdorf an der Iller, where the driver, an 18-year-old woman, overlooked the cyclist while crossing a street. According to Stuttgarter Nachrichten, the cyclist was dragged along with the vehicle for several meters until the car came to a stop. Fortunately, the racing cyclist only sustained minor injuries, while the police estimated the damage caused at around 2,000 euros.

Accidents between cyclists and cars are a serious problem in Germany. According to a current analysis, a total of 441 cyclists died in traffic in 2024, which represents a decrease compared to 2023, but represents an increase in a ten-year comparison. One in six road traffic fatalities was on a bicycle. What is particularly alarming is that 70.7 percent of the 92,882 bicycle accidents resulting in personal injury resulted in collisions with cars. In 75.3 percent of cases, drivers were primarily to blame for these accidents, reports Tagesschau.

Increasing accident rates and road safety

A look at the accident statistics shows that older cyclists are particularly at risk. In 2024, 43.5 percent of cyclists who had fatal accidents were e-bike riders, partly increased by the increasing use of electric bicycles. The figures show that almost two thirds of fatally injured cyclists who were not using electric bikes were over 65 years old. This highlights the need to take preventive measures and increase the safety of cyclists on the road.

Overall, protecting cyclists in Germany remains a challenging task, and it is crucial to raise awareness of this issue for both road users and drivers.
