Heating costs are on the rise: expert advice for Fellbach households!

With the start of the heating season in October 2025, many households in Germany will have to prepare for rising heating costs. According to the consulting company “co2online”, heating costs have risen by an average of 15 percent for households with gas heating this year due to increased energy prices. This will also have an impact on other heating systems, with wood pellets becoming 20 percent more expensive, while the average cost of a 70m² apartment building will change significantly.

Manuel Matzen, a municipal energy consultant in Fellbach, supports citizens with free advice in the so-called “energy consultation hours”. Here consumers have the opportunity to find out about efficient heating and possible savings. Matzen emphasizes that simple measures can often help reduce energy consumption by up to 10 percent.

Rising heating costs in detail

The heating mirror for Germany 2025, published by “co2online”, shows that the heating costs for various energy sources will look like this in the coming year:

energy source Average heating costs
natural gas €1,180
heating oil €1,055
District heating €1,245
Heat pump 715€
Wood pellets 740€

What is particularly noteworthy is that 90 percent of households have savings potential of an average of 400 euros per year. Overall, households nationwide could save around 22 billion euros. To achieve this, both simple and technical measures are recommended, such as hydraulic balancing or insulating heating pipes.

Long-term perspectives and necessary measures

The forecasts for the next 20 years are also alarming. Heating costs for gas and heating oil could triple, and prices for district heating and wood pellets are expected to double. An unrenovated single-family home with gas heating could cause heating costs of around 120,000 euros over 20 years, while an energy modernization combined with a switch to heat pumps could reduce the costs to around 16,000 euros.

The reasons for the rising heating costs are varied. In addition to rising CO₂ prices and higher network fees, structural market changes are also leading to increases in prices. To take the long-term cost factor into account, property owners should consider switching to renewable heating systems and investing accordingly in the energy renovation of their buildings.

The challenges are enormous, but with competent advice and an awareness of efficient heating, many households can at least cushion the rising costs. Citizens in Fellbach are invited to use the city's energy advisory services to find individual solutions.
