Fellbach: Pond renovation instead of a mini forest – what’s behind it?
The Fellbach local council recently decided to renovate the park pond at the Schwabenlandhalle. In a unanimous decision it was decided that the pond would be redesigned instead of a planned “tiny forest”. This decision follows a request from the Die Stadtmacher faction, which originally wanted to install the mini forest at this location. Part of the renovation work includes “discreet fencing” on part of the pond to prevent accidents and deter Egyptian geese, which are often found in the area. Alternative locations are now being examined for the desired Tiny Forest in order to realize the idea of urban greenery. ZVW reports.
In parallel to these developments, Fellbach created its first tiny forest. This is located on a meadow property behind the Süddeutsche Krankenversicherung (SDK). A total of 250 trees will be planted for the project, with building mayor Beatrice Soltys symbolically planting the first tree. The new mini-forest project was launched as part of the SDK's second Sustainability Day, whose topics include diversity and health. This event was organized by Anja Kundic, SDK's sustainability officer, and takes place within a fenced garden area of SDK, which means that this area is not open to the public. Nevertheless, there is an intention to plan a public mini-forest in Fellbach this year.
Sustainable tree species and planting methods
Planting in the Tiny Forest uses the Miyawaki method, which promotes rapid reforestation. The tree species planted include yew, field maple, lilac, hornbeam, hazelnut and bird cherry. In addition, the creation of a flowering meadow and a wild hedge are part of the project. The works council and around 50 other SDK employees were also actively involved in the planting campaign. Despite the challenges of finding a suitable location for a public mini-forest, Mayor Soltys has assured that this initiative will be implemented when the opportunity arises.
