One million for the cultural impulse: World Heritage Fund BW 2025 starts!
The Ministry of Regional Development and Housing in Baden-Württemberg announced today that around one million euros will be made available for various projects at the seven UNESCO World Heritage sites as part of the BW 2025 World Heritage Fund. This was underlined by Minister Nicole Razavi, who highlighted the importance of World Heritage Sites for the country's cultural identity. Through the funding, the state government intends to further strengthen the protection and communication of cultural values and to promote the networking of the sites.
Two important projects in the Ostalbkreis are receiving financial support. On the one hand, the renovation of the replica of the Limes Tower in the Limes Park Rainau is being funded with 32,000 euros. On the other hand, the planned “Roman playground Reiterkastell” will also receive funding of 32,000 euros. Such initiatives are part of the World Heritage Fund's broader goal of supporting heritage-friendly projects.
Funding and programs
In 2024, a special funding program was launched with a budget of around 1.5 million euros, which will be increased to over two million euros in 2025. Each World Heritage site can access up to 200,000 euros per year in funding. The State Office for Monument Preservation in the Stuttgart Regional Council (LAD) is responsible for processing the funding program and provides the sponsors of the World Heritage sites with documents and advice on how to submit applications.
The seven world heritage sites in Baden-Württemberg are:
- Klosteranlage Maulbronn (seit 1993)
- Klosterinsel Reichenau (2000)
- Obergermanisch-Raetischer Limes (2005)
- Prähistorische Pfahlbauten um die Alpen (2011)
- Le Corbusier-Häuser in der Stuttgarter Weissenhofsiedlung (2016)
- Höhlen und Eiszeitkunst der Schwäbischen Alb (2017)
- Baden-Baden als Teil der bedeutenden Kurstädte Europas (2021)
In the coalition agreement, the state government explicitly placed the focus on the protection and communication of these cultural treasures. The World Heritage Fund also strengthens the communication of historical heritage in order to promote cultural awareness in the region.
These measures are part of a larger dream to preserve the uniqueness of World Heritage sites and make them accessible to future generations. Therefore, support for the area of caves and Ice Age art in the Swabian Alb will be continued with an additional 150,000 euros, as will the structural implementation of a World Heritage Information Center in Baden-Baden with 150,000 euros. Further information is available on the Ministry of Regional Development and Housing website.
