Economics in Werding: Coalition pension plans endanger justice!

The pension plans of the black-red coalition, which were presented last week, have met with sharp criticism. Economics Martin Werding, professor of social policy and public finance at the Ruhr University Bochum, expresses concern about the possible consequences of these reforms. According to him, the planned measures are not only costly, but also unfair to future generations.

Werding warns in particular against the expansion of the mother's pension, as this could lead to new injustices. The reforms would not be able to curb spending developments in a socially acceptable way. Rather, the black-red coalition signals the end of older generations' involvement in the costs of aging in Germany. So far, the older generations have contributed to the stability of the pension system, for example by raising the retirement age to 67 and reducing the pension level.

Key points of pension plans

According to the new coalition plans, the pension level is to be stabilized and the mother's pension is to be expanded. At the same time, seniors who continue to work have the opportunity to earn up to 2,000 euros a month tax-free. For children and young people aged six to 18, monthly support of ten euros is provided for a retirement savings account, which Werding sees as a positive impetus for precautionary measures.

  • Ausweitung der Mütterrente gefährdet Gerechtigkeit zwischen Generationen.
  • Renten sollen auf aktuellem Niveau stabilisiert werden.
  • Seniore wenden bis zu 2.000 Euro steuerfrei an.
  • Monatliche Unterstützung von 10 Euro für Altersvorsorgedepots für Kinder und Jugendliche.

But the professor also points out a potential inequality: by expanding the mother's pension, older mothers could be better off than their younger colleagues. This inequality could further inflame social tensions and represents a serious problem for the social structures in Germany.

Various political actors responded to Werding's critical statements and defended the coalition's positions. However, it remains to be seen to what extent the concerns expressed will be incorporated into future negotiations.
