Stuttgart relies on e-mobility: The first electric cars are overtaking gasoline engines!

For the first time, fully electric cars are leading new registrations in Stuttgart, overtaking both petrol and diesel vehicles. By May 31, 2023, 20.9 percent of new registrations were for battery-electric cars, while gasoline vehicles were 20.8 percent and diesel vehicles were 14.4 percent. A total of 3,534 fully electric cars have been newly registered since the beginning of the year. These numbers reflect a significant shift in urban mobility, fueled by the city's commitment to electric mobility. According to Ludwigsburg24, this trend is being driven by competitive models and improved public charging infrastructure.

Another aspect is the total number of newly registered vehicles: In addition to the fully electric cars, 2,998 plug-in hybrids and 4,396 hybrids were registered. Alternative drives now make up 64.7 percent of all new registrations in Stuttgart. Martin Körner, head of the policy department for climate protection, emphasizes that electric cars are now the new standard and is optimistic about the future of urban mobility.

Change in the mobility landscape

The figures make it clear that diesel models have become less important in recent years. The gasoline engine in particular had previously been considered the best-selling drive. Current developments show that the trend towards electromobility is unstoppable. According to Stuttgart.de, new registrations of diesel and gasoline vehicles are falling, while demand for electric cars is continuously increasing.

In order to further promote electromobility, Stuttgart has put together a comprehensive package of measures. This includes the expansion of the charging infrastructure, which, with 3,572 public charging points, makes it the densest among the major German cities. In addition, the city offers advisory services to support citizens and companies in switching to electric drives.

The conversion towards more sustainable mobility is therefore not just a trend reversal, but an integral part of future transport policy in Stuttgart. This progress is actively supported and promoted by many stakeholders, including the city administration, the automotive industry and the population.
