The frequency on line S1 will also be reduced from a fast service to just half an hour. Commuters are already used to such restrictions, as there have been similar closures in the past, which are being discussed in the region's transport committee.

Given the lockdown, theStuttgart Region Association (VRS)approximately250,000 eurosinvest in rail replacement transport (SEV). Buses will run between the stops Hauptbahnhof, Stadtmitte, Feuersee, Schwabstraße, Universität, Österfeld and Vaihingen in order to close the gap in the S-Bahn network.

In order to keep the systems modern, theDigital nodes Stuttgartwith theEuropean Train Control System (ETCS)equipped. A modernization of the S-Bahn tunnel is also planned, which affects all lines.

However, the construction work is not limited to the main route. Additional track renewals on the airport route as well as work on the Gäubahn and on the control and safety technology in Stuttgart-Feuerbach are also planned. The railway also informs passengers about the possible use of electronic timetable information and the DB Navigator.

For the coming year 2026, experts expect a further, probably tighter main route closure, which is already being planned. A special task force for the Gäubahn and the S-21 project will be created to minimize the impact on rail traffic and optimize passenger information.
