The oil trail extended in a south-north direction and ran from Stuttgarter Strasse to Bahnhofstrasse to Siemensstrasse in Schmiden. Due to car traffic, the greasy surface spread onto many streets, which affected the driving behavior of the vehicles. Motorists reported conditions resembling black ice or snow-covered roads, making the situation particularly dangerous. To clean the streets, the fire department used special dulling oil binding agent.
Deployment of the fire brigade and support
The initial team on site was not sufficient to handle the situation. A total of 52 firefighters were mobilized and arrived with ten vehicles. Support also came from the Schmiden operations department. Despite the intensive work, the cause of the oil spill remained unknown at the time of the operation. The investigation into this is still ongoing. The fire department alternates between different tactics to clear the dangerous trail and make the roads safe again.
