Frankfurt's cycle path policy is in transition: CDU proposes new paths!

On June 26, 2025, the citizens of Frankfurt will face important decisions that will significantly influence the future development of their city. The CDU recently presented its election program entitled “Make Frankfurt a city of opportunity”. The party is calling for a clear change in policy in order to make better use of the city's potential. Key goals include the construction of new apartments, fair transport organization and improving safety and cleanliness in Frankfurt. The renovation and construction of new schools are also high on the agenda.

Particularly noteworthy are the missed opportunities that the CDU sees in urban politics. Current housing construction is criticized as inadequate because approvals for new apartments have reached a low point. The traffic situation is also tense: congestion levels are worrying and satisfaction with local public transport is low. In addition, inadequate security is pointed out, for example due to the lack of weapons ban zones and the lack of video surveillance in hotspots. In addition, the party criticizes the current coalition's passivity towards the increasing litter in the streets.

Political initiatives and proposals

The CDU plans to create a building-friendly climate in order to attract investors and better exploit the city's construction potential. In this context, a withdrawal of the strict building land resolution is considered necessary in order to promote new buildings. When selecting preferred building areas, the party relies on the organic development of existing districts instead of new large districts. The development in the “Productive Praunheim” area is considered appropriate, while the Neuweststadt area was rejected.

In order to increase safety and cleanliness in the city, the CDU is calling for the creation of 50 new positions in the city police. An innovative financing solution for large investment projects, such as the municipal theaters, should also be developed. Another proposal from the CDU is to introduce a debt cap to ease the burden on future generations and promote budget discipline. The proposal to reduce property taxes is also intended to reduce the financial burden on households.

The Greens and their visions for Frankfurt

A central point of their program is the demand for climate-neutral, well-connected and largely car-free new neighborhoods. 60 percent of the apartments should be subsidized apartments. The Greens aim to transform all city activities to be climate neutral by 2030 and to make the entire city climate neutral by 2035. Central topics such as gender equality, anti-feminism and anti-racism are also addressed, with strengthening integration policy and support for the cultural scene in Frankfurt being further focal points.

The Greens are trying to implement their ideas for improving mobility in the city with an active transport policy and the promotion of cycling. Your “City on the Main” concept is intended to help fundamentally improve transport policy. The preparation of their list for the city council meeting is scheduled for November 14th and 15th; The list for the local councils and the local foreigners' representatives will follow on November 28th.

In view of these two election programs, the people of Frankfurt are now faced with the challenge of finding the best solutions for their city. While the CDU is pushing for a policy change, the Greens are presenting a sustainable vision for the future of Frankfurt. The coming months will show which direction city politics will take.
