Strawberry harvest 2025 in the Rems-Murr district: A true fruit dream!
The strawberry harvest in the Rems-Murr district for 2025 is described as exceptional. According to Stuttgarter Nachrichten reports, the quality of the fruit is remarkable, both in terms of aroma and quantity. The favorable weather conditions responsible for the harvest are characterized by moderate temperatures and frequent cloud cover. These conditions have given farmers, including Mathias Kilburger, Philipp Bauerle and Joachim Mergenthaler, super flavorful strawberries, while approaching warm weather next weekend could further boost the harvest.
What is particularly pleasing for strawberry lovers is that there was no frost this season, which has a positive effect on the quality and yield of the fruit. After all, according to surveys, 79 percent of Germans chose strawberries as their favorite fruit, ahead of apples. This shows the huge popularity of the bright red berries in the nation.
A wide range of offerings in Fellbach
In the Fellbach region, which is not far from the Rems-Murr district, the strawberry harvest usually begins in May and lasts until September or until the first frost. Various varieties such as the early ripening Elvira and the aromatic Senga Sengana are offered here. These strawberries are available fresh during the harvest season, making the region a popular destination for strawberry lovers. Other interesting offerings in Fellbach include pick-your-own fruit, organic farms and the harvest of blueberries, cherries and plums.
The Stuttgarter Nachrichten also reports that the annual per capita consumption of strawberries in Germany is around 3.3 kilograms. In comparison, the total fruit consumption per person is 66.6 kilograms. Despite the high demand, only around 41 percent of strawberry demand can be met through domestic production, which leads to the import of a good 179,000 tons of strawberries, mainly from European countries such as Spain and Greece. A significant part of the imported strawberries are fresh products, while strawberries come to Germany from southern Europe and North Africa in the months November to February.
Building and caring for strawberry plants
The majority of strawberries offered in Germany come from domestic cultivation, with over 1,000 varieties of strawberries that differ in the beginning of flowering, fruit ripeness, shape and taste. Cultivation is usually carried out on a large scale and predominantly by machine, with the high proportion of manual labor ensuring the quality of the strawberries. Scientific findings show that, botanically speaking, strawberries are collective nut fruits and belong to the rose family.
For successful cultivation, strawberry plants need deep, humus-rich loamy soil. Harvesting usually takes place early in the morning and ends before midday to preserve the freshness and quality of the strawberries. To achieve the best taste results, ripe strawberries are picked with the green sepals. German strawberries are usually available from protected cultivation until mid-December, while imported varieties are often firmer to withstand longer transport routes.
The strawberry harvest in the Rems-Murr district and the offers in Fellbach show that the 2025 season has so far been extremely promising for strawberry farmers. The anticipation of the harvest reflects the great popularity of this fruit and gives hope for an enjoyable season.
