One year after the flood: Rudersberg is fighting for survival!

On the night of June 3, 2024, Rudersberg in the Rems-Murr district was hit by devastating heavy rain and subsequent flooding. That night the water rose almost two meters high and flooded the cellars, apartments and shops of the 11,700 residents. A year after this catastrophic event, the traces of destruction are still visible, as SWR reports. Taped-off windows and water level markings on walls bear witness to the power of nature.

Mayor Raimon Ahrens estimates the damage at around 150 million euros. Over 1,000 households were affected and around half of public facilities suffered damage. While the Volksbank and the Kreissparkasse continue to work in containers, the Sparkasse plans to return to the renovated business in July. Some businesses, such as Werner Hinderer's butcher shop, have resumed operations, while others, such as a stationery shop and a hairdresser, did not survive. Hinderer emphasizes that it is almost a miracle that no one died in Rudersberg.

Cohesion and willingness to help

The Rudersberg community showed impressive solidarity in the crisis situation. The crisis team from the police, fire department and district coordinated the operations efficiently, supported by numerous volunteer and full-time members of the fire department, the DRK, the DLRG, the THW and the police. Local entrepreneurs and farmers also helped with machines and equipment to support the initial clean-up work. The solidarity of the population, which was characterized by volunteer work and donations of goods and money, contributed significantly to the rapid restoration of the community's functionality, as reported on the community's website.

Nevertheless, it should be noted that the reconstruction is far from complete. Many shops are empty or damaged. Insurance issues further delay the process. Citizens in Rudersberg remain concerned about possible future heavy rain events and the associated dangers.

Outlook for the future

A new dam that was opened shortly before the flood may have prevented the worst damage. However, the challenge remains to restore the city's damaged infrastructure and economic base. Mayor Ahrens makes it clear that the focus is now on companies and private and public infrastructure. The commitment of all involved forces will be crucial in order to overcome the challenges that lie ahead of the Rudersberg community.

In summary, it can be seen that the heavy rain on June 2, 2024 not only caused material damage, but also tested the community and cohesion of the citizens in Rudersberg. We work together to create a positive future.
