Major fire in Backnang: the waste disposal company's warehouse is ablaze!
On the night of Tuesday, June 3, 2025, a major fire broke out in a waste disposal company in the Rems-Murr district, which completely destroyed a warehouse. The fire brigade was deployed with more than 100 emergency services in the area of Heinrich-Hertz-Strasse in Backnang to fight the flames. When the fire department arrived, the warehouse was already ablaze and thick, black smoke was billowing across the city, causing visibility issues.
Local authorities reported that large amounts of garbage were stored in the hall, which also caught fire. Despite the intense fire development, the flames were successfully prevented from spreading to adjacent buildings. The exact cause of the fire is currently unclear and investigations into the extent of the damage are ongoing.

The extinguishing work is proving to be challenging and is estimated by the fire department to take several hours. Residents were asked to be extra careful and asked to keep windows and doors closed and turn off air conditioning to protect themselves from potentially dangerous fumes. Heinrich-Hertz-Straße is closed in both directions between Weissacher Straße and Bundesstraße 14.
Earlier, on Friday night, there was a fire in a warehouse at a landfill in Kottweil, Berglen, also in the Rems-Murr district. 85 firefighters were deployed to extinguish the recycled material and the damage was estimated at around 500,000 euros. Extinguishing work began here after an alarm was raised at around 12:40 a.m., with the fire department needing around two hours to bring the fire under control. Residents noticed the smoke and alerted the fire department in good time.
The operation involved a total of 12 fire engines, including turntable ladders and respiratory protection equipment trucks. The rescue service was on site with 24 active personnel and 8 vehicles. Fortunately, no injuries were reported and the hall was able to remain stable without collapsing. However, further use must be checked by an expert.
In both incidents, authorities emphasized the need to determine the cause of the fire as there is currently no information available. While the extinguishing work is still ongoing in Backnang, those responsible are also concerned about the reactions of residents and possible health risks from smoke gases.
The comprehensive support from neighboring fire departments - such as in Kottweil by the forces from Winnenden, Schorndorf and Fellbach - shows the importance of cooperation in such emergencies.
