Two traffic accidents in Hemmingen: E-scooter driver escapes!

In the period from June 5th, 6 p.m., to June 6th, 12 p.m., the Hemmingen police reported several incidents of traffic accidents in the region. Particularly noteworthy is an incident on Laubeichenfeld Street, in which a parked Ford Focus was damaged on the left side of the vehicle by an unknown road user. The person responsible left the scene of the accident without permission, which means the estimated damage to the vehicle is around 2,000 euros. Police believe there may be a fugitive van that may be connected to the incident. This is another example of the increasing number of traffic accidents that can be observed in Germany.

Another incident occurred on June 6th at 4 p.m. on Göttinger Landstrasse, near the light rail terminus. A 40-year-old from Aschaffenburg, who was driving an Audi, had to stop at a pedestrian crossing due to traffic. An e-scooter with two people approached from behind and the driver recognized the situation too late, so he drove into the rear of the Audi. To make matters worse, the passenger walked away from the scene of the accident while the e-scooter driver drove away in his vehicle. The damage to the Audi is estimated at 3,500 euros. Despite an intensive search, it turned out negatively. The police in Ronnenberg are asking for information by calling (0 51 09) 51 70.

E-scooter accidents in Germany are on the rise

The above-mentioned incidents are part of a worrying trend in Germany regarding e-scooter accidents. According to the Federal Statistical Office, the number of e-scooter accidents resulting in personal injury rose by 14.1% to a total of 9,425 accidents in 2023. What is worrying is that the number of deaths in this area doubled from 11 in 2022 to 22 in 2023. The most common causes of accidents are incorrect road use at 19.4% and the influence of alcohol at 15.1%.( Destatis )

The accident victims are predominantly young people: 41.6% of e-scooter users were under 25 years old and 80.4% were under 45 years old. This makes it clear that younger road users are particularly at risk. In addition, 48.0% of e-scooter users were injured in collisions with cars. It is important to note that e-scooters have been permitted on the road in Germany since June 15, 2019 and their use is always subject to insurance.

Everyone involved must be aware of the risks and follow applicable traffic regulations. In particular, riding on sidewalks is prohibited, and e-scooter drivers must observe minimum age and alcohol limits. This is crucial to reducing the number of accidents and injuries in the future.
