Arnum in the process of change: Göttinger Straße becomes an experience space!
The redesign of the former federal highway 3 (B3) in Arnum is being pushed forward with concrete measures. The new designs for Göttinger Straße were presented at an information event on Tuesday evening. This includes a variety of measures aimed at improving the quality of life in the district and restructuring the traffic flow. haz.de reports that Four roundabouts are planned to optimize traffic flow.
The largest roundabout will be built at the Wilkenburger Straße/Bockstraße intersection, while smaller variants are planned at Hohen Holzweg/Sundernweg, Harkenblecker Weg and Hiddestorfer Straße. All traffic lights will be removed; Instead, zebra crossings on Klapperweg and Mühlenweg should offer pedestrians safety. In addition, the old Wilkenburger Straße will be made more open and will have a new neighborhood square with trees and benches.
Traffic and parking spaces in focus
A central aspect of the redesign is the regulation of parking. Parking will no longer be permitted on Göttinger Street, while parking bays will be set up instead. This will result in a reduction in parking spaces from 149 to 108. Speed limits of 30 km/h on the urban section are intended to increase safety, while 50 km/h may continue to apply on the L389.
Separate cycle paths are provided for cyclists where space allows. In addition, a new bus stop will be set up at the old Wilkenburger Straße. In an environmentally friendly step, the conversion will also involve significant interventions in the green infrastructure: 32 trees will be felled, 9 will be transplanted and 100 new trees will be planted.
A sustainable renovation project
The city of Hemmingen was included in the urban development funding program “Growth and Sustainable Renewal – Creating Livable Neighborhoods” in 2020, as well stadthemmingen.de reports. The funding area includes “Arnum-Mitte” and plans to promote both public and private measures. A funding guideline based on a design manual is being planned to support these concerns.
The first steps include an inventory analysis of the private buildings and land by the Puche planning group from Hildesheim. This analysis will be supplemented in September by on-site visits to the redevelopment area, during which private properties will be examined and photographed. The results of this inventory analysis are to be presented at a citizens' meeting; the date will be announced in due course.
Citizens gave feedback on the new drafts at the information event. In particular, the desire was expressed for more parking spaces on the old Wilkenburger Straße, as well as for a lounge area near the pharmacy. The renovation is expected to begin in mid-2026 and is estimated to cost over 11 million euros, although the measures could take around 15 years.
A strategy group will meet after the summer holidays to discuss the new drafts and plan further steps. Citizens are invited to actively participate in the process and raise their concerns.
