A new wind in Bietigheim-Bissingen: bosses are leaving, fiber optics is booming!

In Bietigheim-Bissingen there is a change in management at the municipal utilities. Managing Director Richard Mastenbroek and First Mayor Michael Hanus resigned from their positions today, July 4, 2025. The supervisory board has appointed Herbert Marquard as the new interim boss. Marquard was managing director of Stadtwerke Pforzheim until the end of May 2023 and is now taking over management in Bietigheim-Bissingen. The realignment of the municipal utilities could have far-reaching effects on the region's infrastructure in the near future.

This realignment is becoming increasingly important, especially in the context of digitalization. Deutsche Telekom recently announced a cooperation with Stadtwerke Bietigheim-Bissingen with the aim of expanding the fiber optic network in the Stuttgart area. This partnership is intended to create synergies in network utilization and make network expansion more efficient. The municipal utilities will take over the construction of the passive network infrastructure, while Telekom will exclusively rent the network and manage active network operations. This collaboration is significant because the new fiber optic (FTTH) connections will offer speeds of up to 1 Gbit/s.

Strategic goal and future plans

The ambitious project aims to supply around 90 percent of all households in Bietigheim-Bissingen with fiber optics by 2030. The expected number of customers is around 20,000. The total route length of the project is almost 130 kilometers. Mayor Jürgen Kessing and Thilo Höllen from Telekom emphasize the need to prepare the city for future requirements and the importance of cooperation for the fiber optic strategy.

These developments not only mark an organizational change at the municipal utilities, but are also part of a larger trend to improve the digital infrastructure in the Stuttgart region. The fact that Telekom is committed to the “open access principle” indicates that it is striving for efficient use of the newly created infrastructure. The partnership between the municipal utilities and Telekom could be groundbreaking for the digital future of Bietigheim-Bissingen.
