New course for Deutsche Bahn: Will Palla turn things around?

Deutsche Bahn is facing comprehensive changes: a comprehensive renovation plan for important routes is intended to improve rail transport in Germany. DB InfraGo plans to fundamentally renovate over 40 corridors by 2036. Comprehensive repairs are to be accompanied by months-long closures, with the railway promising at least five years of construction freedom in return. These measures are necessary because DB recorded a loss of 760 million euros at the end of the first half of 2025. The railway also faces the challenge of making loss-making parts such as DB Cargo profitable. Bietigheim newspaper reports that the scope of some construction projects has already had to be adjusted to meet these challenges.

The focus of these measures is also on the new railway boss, who comes from South Tyrol and has been working at Deutsche Bahn since 2019. Palla, born in 1973, began her career in 1997 at Infineon Technologies AG and later worked for Eon and the Austrian Federal Railways, where she served as a board member of ÖBBpersonalverkehr AG from 2015. Bietigheim newspaper emphasizes that Palla should implement the railway's strategy, which is entitled “Agenda for satisfied customers on the rails”.

General renovations and operational optimization

The Federal Ministry of Transport has approved DB InfraGo AG's new schedule for the general renovation of highly stressed sections of the route. This revised schedule takes into account the resources of the rail and construction industries as well as feedback from various rail companies and associations. German railway reports that the adjustments to the renovation periods are made within the framework of the coalition agreement and the term of the special fund for infrastructure and climate neutrality.

Numerous general renovations are planned for the coming years. The plan for 2024 summarizes corridors such as Hagen-Wuppertal-Cologne and Nuremberg-Regensburg, while renewal projects such as Rosenheim-Salzburg and Lehrte-Berlin are already planned for 2027. From 2028, DB InfraGO AG will continue to work on general renovations until 2036, including important routes such as Stuttgart-Ulm. It is important that all necessary work should be bundled profitably in order to minimize the restrictions for travelers and freight transport companies.

Financial challenges and future vision

Despite the promised financial resources, current railway boss Lutz warns that these will not be enough to achieve the necessary future stability. Pressure to save money at the federal level remains, which further complicates planning. It is also unclear how much financial support Palla can negotiate as the new railway boss with Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil. The development of the infrastructure and the optimization of railway operations depend heavily on political support in order to achieve the railway's goals: to become faster, leaner, more powerful and more economical. Bietigheim newspaper as well as German railway combine their information to clearly present both the current situation and future challenges.
