Car recovered in Alt-Neckar: Where is the driver?

In the early morning of May 29, 2025, passers-by discovered a sunken vehicle in the Alt-Neckar in Freiberg am Neckar, in the Ludwigsburg district. The rescue workers who were immediately alerted lifted the Mercedes GLC 300 out of the water with a crane around 12:30 a.m. However, there was no one else in the car at that time. The circumstances surrounding how the vehicle ended up in the river are still unclear and police have launched an investigation. The whereabouts of the vehicle owner also remains a mystery, as esslinger-zeitung.de reports.

Before the vehicle was recovered, there was an accident on highway 1100 between Neckargröningen and Remseck-Hochberg. According to bild.de, the incident occurred due to presumably inappropriate speed when the car flew out of a right-hand bend, crossed the guardrail and fell down a ten-meter-deep slope. The 27-year-old driver and his 30-year-old passenger were in the vehicle at the time.

Rescue operation with a large contingent

After falling on its head, the car landed in the Neckar. While the driver helped the passenger to free himself from the vehicle, he was unable to escape and drowned. Numerous emergency services took care of the two accident victims. A total of 75 firefighters and 19 vehicles were on duty, supported by 25 members of the DLRG and other rescue workers. The passenger was taken to a hospital where her condition is described as stable.

The comprehensive statistics on traffic accidents, as presented on destatis.de, take such accidents seriously. They form the basis for legislative measures, traffic education and road construction measures in Germany. The results also show how important the identification of the causes of accidents and the analysis of accident events are for road safety.

Investigations to clarify the exact circumstances of the accident and the whereabouts of the driver are currently ongoing. It is hoped that investigators will soon be able to provide more comprehensive information.
