Arsenalplatz in Ludwigsburg: From the parking lot to a green oasis!
The renovation of Arsenalplatz in Ludwigsburg has been successfully completed. The former parking lot has now been transformed into a green oasis that is intended to significantly improve the city's climate. Loud SWR The renovation took a year, with the aim of transforming the square into a cool place to stay for citizens and visitors.
The redesign, which had been planned since 2013, has equipped the square with 40 new trees, a water feature, seating and a special floor that can better absorb and evaporate rainwater. This is particularly important as climate analysis maps predict that temperatures in Ludwigsburg will continue to rise until 2035. Old parking spaces were thus converted into valuable green spaces.
Central elements of the redesign
Key elements of the transformation include a grove of 60 newly planted trees, which were planted in November 2024. A water feature and bubbling fountains decorate the area on Wilhelmstrasse. This can be used for events when the fountains are switched off, increasing use by the public. According to project manager Jürgen Straß, it is important that the space is perceived as a pleasant place to stay.

In order to involve citizens more intensively in the newly designed environment, the city is offering guided tours of the construction site. These took place on January 30 and February 6, 2025, with prior registration required. Participants were asked to wear sturdy shoes in order to experience the advantages and details of the new park landscape up close.
In addition, the city is planning smaller events such as concerts, after-work evenings, a French boules tournament as well as street food fiestas and open-air flea markets, which will further enliven the square. The new public underground car park in the Regele area also provides a modern alternative to reduce car traffic from the city center and use the area for recreation.
