Drunk driving, gas leaks and children throwing stones: chaos in Wertheim!
On Saturday, June 23, 2025, there were several incidents in the Main-Tauber district that put both the police and the fire department on alert. In particular, a gas leak in the Comenius secondary school in Wertheim and a traffic accident with an alcoholic driver in Tauberbischofsheim caused worried reports.
In the evening, around 8:45 p.m., the police were informed of a gas leak in the Comenius secondary school. Emergency services and the Wertheim fire department were quickly on site. The first measurements showed that the gas values were above the permitted limits. Safety measures were taken immediately: the power supply was switched off, the gas supply was turned off and the building was thoroughly ventilated. Fortunately, school operations were able to resume normally on Monday morning. The police have started an investigation into the cause of the gas leak.
Alcohol-related traffic accident
There was a serious traffic accident in Tauberbischofsheim at 12 p.m. on the same day. A 49-year-old driver, who was obviously under the influence of alcohol, lost control of his VW Golf and left the road in the roundabout. He damaged a road divider and only avoided a head-on collision with another car thanks to the courageous intervention of another driver, who applied the emergency brake in time. The driver continued his journey without fulfilling his obligation to report the accident.
A police officer who witnessed the incident followed the man to his home address. An alcohol test carried out revealed a level of just under 0.8 per mille. The driver then had to give a blood sample and surrender his driver's license. The material damage is estimated at around 3,000 euros. The police are still looking for the unknown driver of the car who prevented a possible collision. Witnesses can call 09341 810.
Children throw stones from a bridge
Another incident occurred on the same day in Bad Mergentheim when a 53-year-old car driver reported children throwing stones from a bridge onto the street. A stone the size of a fist damaged their vehicle, but fortunately there were no serious consequences. The police have also started investigating this case and are asking for information from witnesses on 07931 54990.
Technical defect leads to vehicle fire
Another alarming incident occurred in Bad Mergentheim on Saturday afternoon when a minibus on district road 2857 caught fire due to a technical defect. The Weikersheim fire department was on site with six vehicles and 38 emergency services to put out the fire. The damage to the vehicle amounts to around 10,000 euros, while the damage to the road surface and the cleaning costs are estimated at around 20,000 euros.
These incidents highlight the challenges facing emergency responders in the region. In particular, the legal consequences for traffic-related crimes under the influence of alcohol are significant. Traffic accidents that occur under the influence of alcohol or drugs can result in both criminal and civil consequences. According to Section 316 of the Criminal Code, such actions are punishable, although even milder values than 0.5 per mille can lead to liability for inexperienced drivers. Civil liability can include damage to third parties or their vehicles, so that affected persons can assert corresponding claims [ra-kotz.de](https://www.ra-kotz.de/verkehrsunfall-unter-lokal-oder-drogeneinfluss-laufen-fuer- Schadenssatz-und-strafrecht.htm).
The police and local authorities will continue to work hard to investigate these incidents in order to ensure safety in the Main-Tauber district and to take legal action.
