Lublin Hospital uses state-of-the-art brain monitoring for safe operations

The University Hospital No. 4 in Lublin has taken a significant step in medical care: permanent monitoring of brain functions during operations and in intensive care is now being implemented as a standard procedure. This was recently announced and represents an innovative measure aimed at increasing patient safety and speeding up their recovery. Although the technology for real-time monitoring of the brain's electrical activity has been known for years, it is rarely used routinely in Poland. The goal of the newly implemented neuromonitoring is to avoid permanent damage to the nervous system, especially in older or seriously ill patients. These measures are intended to prevent complications such as delirium, neuropsychological disorders and psychological problems from occurring. Fast reactions and better care

The benefits of neuromonitoring are complex. During anesthesia, the system allows immediate responses to signs of ischemia or nerve compression. In the intensive care unit, however, more precise dosing of sedatives is possible, which significantly improves patient rehabilitation. Patients under neuromonitoring are less likely to require rehospitalization and can return to normal social life more quickly. This is enabled by faster detection of problems before the onset of clinical symptoms, leading to more effective treatment interventions.

International brain physiology expert Prof. Jose Antonio Laguna, during his visit to Lublin in June 2023, praised the high quality of care and doctors' efforts to ensure patient safety. He emphasized that the implementation of neuromonitoring has the potential to fundamentally change the philosophy of patient treatment and the approach to anesthesia.

Innovative approaches in neurosurgery

In addition to the progress in Lublin, there are other notable developments within Poland. A new type of neuromonitoring during surgical procedures to correct scoliosis was introduced at the Viktor Dega Orthopedic and Rehabilitation Hospital in Poznań. These procedures, which have been in use for six years, significantly reduce patients' risk of complications. These forms of neuromonitoring, which use electrical pulses or magnetic fields to check the conduction of nerve impulses, have proven to be extremely beneficial, particularly in relation to the effects of anesthesia on signal quality. The latest developments in neuromonitoring technology show how important it is for medical facilities in Poland to adopt global standards to improve safety and chances of recovery for patients.
