Ten years of Café Schatzinsel”: A celebration for the seniors of Schongau!

The “Café Schatzinsel” of the Ecumenical Social Station in Schongau recently celebrated its tenth anniversary. The celebration took place in the friendly rooms of the AWO on Karmeliterstrasse and was attended by around 15 seniors. The atmosphere was familiar and loving, particularly supported by artistic photo collages and crafts by Biggi Horn, which filled the room with color and joy.

Six employees and one employee from the social center organized the festival with a lot of commitment. They baked cakes and prepared a coffee table to ensure the guests had a pleasant afternoon. Mayor Falk Sluyterman attended the celebration and surprised the seniors with gifts wrapped in a treasure chest. A rickshaw ride chauffeured by Hubert Hohmann also provided a special moment. This rickshaw will be used for further excursions in the summer, including to a Kneipp pool at the ice stadium.

A place of encounter and relief

The “Café Schatzinsel” offers more than just a coffee hour. It is a place where seniors, especially people with dementia, can maintain important social contacts. The regularity of the meetings helps the participants to develop a stable daily structure, which is of great importance for people with dementia. Birgit Stögbauer, an employee, emphasized how important this routine is for guests because it helps promote emotional well-being and stabilize everyday life.

Relief for caring relatives is also an important aspect of day care. For example, Mr. B., who suffers from senile dementia, visits the café once a week. This relieves the burden on his wife, who looks after him at home every day. Day care takes place every Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the Mohrenhaus and includes a wide range of activities such as walks in the old town, coffee sessions and activities that are specifically tailored to the needs of seniors, including reading aloud, crafts and memory training.

Structured day planning

A well-structured daily routine and a safe household are crucial for relatives suffering from dementia. This not only enables you to cope with everyday life easily and safely, but also reduces stressful situations. Recommended measures include non-slip carpets, clear paths and easily accessible light switches to prevent falls. Technical aids such as stove switch-off devices increase the feeling of security in your own home, which can relieve the burden on relatives.

The care levels play an important role in financing dementia care, as older people from care level 1 can receive support from long-term care insurance. Various forms of dementia care are offered, both outpatient and day-care, which are tailored to the respective needs. These help to promote social contacts and increase the emotional well-being of seniors.

The successful anniversary of the “Café Schatzinsel” shows how important such contact points are for seniors and their relatives. They not only offer care, but also a protected space for activity, community and relief in everyday life.
