Strawberry prices are exploding: VdK calls for an increase in citizens' money!

The strawberry season is very popular in Germany. The sweet fruits are a popular food, especially between May and the beginning of August. Nevertheless, prices are rising, which poses a financial challenge for many citizens, especially lower-income groups. Loud Mercury The prices for a kilogram of German strawberries increased from 5.31 euros at the beginning of June 2024 to 5.87 euros in the same period in 2025. This significant increase of 56 cents reflects the general price development, which has seen the price of strawberries double over the last ten years.

A main reason for these price increases is the increased labor costs, which now account for around 60 percent of production costs. Many of the harvest workers from Eastern European countries are often employed on a seasonal basis, which has an additional impact on the cost structure. In any case, German strawberries are in competition with cheaper imports from southern Europe, especially from Spain, where strawberries are often offered at significantly lower prices. Loud WMN Spain exports around 74 tons of strawberries to Germany every year.

Social responsibility and required measures

Changing prices make it difficult, especially for people with low incomes or those on social benefits, to afford these popular fruits. The social association VdK is therefore calling on politicians to adapt the standard rates of citizens' money to current price developments. VdK President Verena Bentele emphasizes that an increase in citizens' money and a reduction in VAT on basic foodstuffs are necessary in order to help those affected.

These demands are particularly urgent as the cost of living, particularly for basic foodstuffs, has risen sharply. While in 2024 each person in Germany consumed an average of around 3.3 kilograms of strawberries, the current price represents a hurdle that is not insignificant. “We see a clear need for action from politicians,” said Bentele. “It is crucial to improve access to food for lower-income groups and provide them with adequate financial support.”

Looking to the future

Developments on the strawberry price market shed light on major economic and social challenges in Germany. The demand made by the VdK to consistently take price developments for basic foods into account must now be taken seriously by decision-makers. If demand continues to rise and prices rise at the same time, without measures, a critical situation could quickly arise for many low-income households.

Given these developments, both consumers and political actors must work hand in hand to find an appropriate solution that allows everyone to enjoy the sweet, red fruits during the season.
