Tony Awards 2025: Broadway celebrates debut stars with records!

The 2025 Tony Awards took place yesterday at Radio City Music Hall, providing a celebratory highlight for the Broadway company and audiences worldwide. In a remarkable year, four actors were honored for their Broadway debuts, accounting for half of the acting categories. This represents one of the best performances for debut performances in the 21st century, such as Gold Derby reported.

Among the winners is Sarah Snook, who was recognized for her impressive performance in The Picture of Dorian Gray. In this play she plays no less than 26 characters. Her fellow nominee for Best Actress in a Play, Laura Donnelly, was also nominated for “The Hills of California.”

The big winner of the night was the musical “Maybe Happy Ending,” which won six awards and had ten nominations. This also included the “Best Musical” category, in which the piece was able to assert itself against competitors such as “Buena Vista Social Club” and “Death Becomes Her”. Will Aronson and Hue Park were honored for their exceptional work on “Maybe Happy Ending” with awards for Best Music, Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score.

Another honoree was Cole Escola, who became the first non-binary performer to win Best Actor in a Play for “Oh Mary!” received, which he also wrote himself. “Sunset Boulevard” proved to be another surprise of the night as Nicole Scherzinger won Best Actress in a Musical for her role, beating favorite Audra McDonald, who was nominated for her performance in “Gypsy.”

This year there was more diversity, with Maleah Joi Moon (2024) and Jodie Comer (2023) among the list of previous debut winners.

Apart from the actors, various technical categories were also awarded. Marg Horwell won Best Costume Design of a Play for “The Picture of Dorian Gray.” Jonathan Spector and Michael Arden also received awards for their direction in “Eureka Day” and “Maybe Happy Ending.” The event underlines the creative diversity and innovative power of Broadway and remains an important event in the theater landscape NBC News.

In summary, the evening of the 2025 Tony Awards was not only a celebration of outstanding performances, but also another sign of the progressive development of the scene on Broadway. The celebrations and awards demonstrate the commitment to diversity in the theater industry.
