Maya Joint crowned Eastbourne champions after dramatic finale!

On June 28, 2025, Maya Joint won the Lexus Eastbourne Open, securing her second Hologic WTA Tour title of the year. The 19-year-old Australian, who hails from the USA, defeated 20-year-old qualifier Alexandra Eala from the Philippines 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (10). The thrilling final match lasted over 2 hours and 26 minutes, during which Joint had to fend off four match points before claiming victory. This performance follows her first title win in Rabat, where she triumphed on red clay, and confirms her versatility on different surfaces.

The final marked the youngest Eastbourne final since 1981, considering the combined ages of the two players. Both Joint and Eala were unseeded surprise finalists who defeated some notable opponents throughout the tournament. Joint had earlier beaten former top 10 player Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 7-5, 6-3, while Eala beat Varvara Gracheva 7-5, 2-6, 6-3. As the tournament progressed, Eala impressed with wins against three Grand Slam champions.

Career highlights and outlook

Following this win, Joint is expected to move into the top 50 in the updated PIF WTA Rankings. Her current pre-match ranking was 41st, having fought her way up from 1384th in just 18 months. Eala, who celebrated her first WTA final appearance at this tournament, is currently ranked 74th. Her next major event is already approaching: at Wimbledon she will face defending champion Barbora Krejcikova.

The placements and performances achieved by both players are impressive. Maja Joint will also compete in the Eastbourne doubles final alongside her partner Hsieh Su-wei. There they meet the duo Marie Bouzkova and Anna Danilina.

With these successes, both players have promising expectations for the upcoming Wimbledon Championship, where Joint will face the 19th seed Liudmila Samsonova. Interest in this WTA 250 tournament is growing, especially due to the young players who are bringing a breath of fresh air to tennis.
