Household Hazardous Waste: Dispose of Safely in Owen Sound Now!

An important household hazardous waste disposal event will take place in Owen Sound today, June 14, 2025. The collection event, organized by the city, is aimed at residents of Owen Sound, Chatsworth, Georgian Bluffs, Meaford and Gray Highlands. This opportunity allows citizens to safely dispose of old paint cans, propane tanks and other hazardous materials.

The event will take place at the Public Works Facility on 20th Street East. Opening times are from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. To use the service, a valid ID with residential address is required. It is important to note that waste from commercial, industrial or agricultural operations will not be accepted.

Eligible participants and disposal options

The service is only available to residents of the above-mentioned areas. Participants must bring a valid ID with a residential address from the affected areas and also fill out a Hazardous Waste Form. This makes it easier to properly document the collected materials.

For disposal of hazardous materials that cannot be accepted during Household Hazardous Waste events, the City provides a convenient solution: the RPRA “Where to Recycle” card. This map shows various locations in Ontario where materials such as batteries, electronics, household hazardous waste, lighting and tires can be dropped off for free.

Environmental protection and reuse

Environmental protection and minimizing waste are at the heart of this initiative. The collected materials are either reused, refurbished, recycled or disposed of properly. The aim of these measures is to reduce the burden on landfills, recover valuable resources and ultimately protect the environment. Residents have the opportunity to indicate their location, the distance they are willing to travel and the type of material they would like to recycle to find the best disposal location for them.

The initiatives to reduce hazardous waste have not only become an important part of municipal environmental policy, but also offer citizens the opportunity to actively contribute to environmental protection. The City of Owen Sound and its neighboring communities are committed to creating a clean, safe environment in which all generations can live.
