Big DFB Cup draw: Owen Ansah as lottery ticket in Dortmund!
The upcoming DFB Cup season is just around the corner and there is exciting news for fans of German football. The draw for the first main round of the DFB Cup will take place on Sunday, June 15, 2025. This will be broadcast live from the German Football Museum in Dortmund at 5:15 p.m. The presenter Lili Engels will lead the evening, while Germany's fastest man, Owen Ansah, will act as the lottery ticket. Ansah made history with a time of 9.99 seconds in 2024 by becoming the first German to run the 100 meters in under 10 seconds. He is receiving support from DFB Vice President Peter Frymuth, as insideBW reports.
The first round of the DFB Cup will take place from August 15th to 18th, 2025. A total of 64 clubs come into play in the draw, including the teams in places 15 to 18 in the 2nd Bundesliga as well as the four best teams in the 3rd league of the 2024/25 season and 24 representatives of the regional associations. The Bundesliga teams are in a separate draw pot, consisting of 18 teams and 14 of the best-placed second division teams from last season, as Sportschau explains.
Special game formats and important dates
Defending champions VfB Stuttgart, who defeated Arminia Bielefeld 4-2 in the last final, will enter the tournament during this round along with FC Bayern Munich on August 26th or 27th, 2025, as both teams will play the new Franz Beckenbauer Cup on August 16th, 2025. There are already set dates for the further rounds: The second main round will take place on October 28th and 29th, 2025, followed by the round of 16 on December 2nd and 3rd, 2025 and the quarterfinals on February 3rd, 4th, 10th and 11th, 2026. The semi-finals are scheduled for April 21st and 22nd, 2026, and the grand finale will take place on Held on May 23, 2026 in the Berlin Olympic Stadium.

The last cup final, in which Arminia Bielefeld played against VfB Stuttgart, was watched by 7.69 million viewers and achieved a market share of 32.3 percent, underlining the continued popularity of the DFB Cup.
