Cold Spring Harbor triumphs again: 7th championship title in a row!
In an impressive finale, the Cold Spring Harbor girls lacross team won the Nassau Class D championship by defeating Locust Valley 18-5. This triumph, which occurred on May 28, 2025, marks the Seahawks' seventh consecutive county title. The deciding game was played at the Adelphi University campus and showcased the team's dominance, entering the game with an impressive 15-3 record while Locust Valley finished 12-6. Cold Spring Harbor, the reigning Class D state champions, have not lost a postseason game on Long Island since 2017 and have claimed titles in three of the last five state tournaments between Classes C and D.
The team started furiously and scored the first six goals of the game. After the first quarter they were already leading 8-2 and by halftime the lead had grown to 13-2. Six players on the team contributed at least three points, including Maggie Spehr with four goals and one assist, as well as Ruby Spielberger and Kelly Callaghan, who both contributed two goals and two assists. Senior defender Zoe Soskin reflected on the team dynamic and emphasized the commitment to making each other better.
Successful season and upcoming challenges
This championship season is particularly notable for Cold Spring Harbor as they now prepare for the next big thing: the Long Island Class D Championship, which will be held on June 3 at 11:30 a.m. also at Adelphi University. They will face the winner of the Mattituck vs. Babylon game. The Seahawks, under the leadership of head coach Danielle Castellane, have won a total of 17 games with just four losses this year and could add another title to their impressive record.
After winning the Nassau Class D championship, the Seahawks also triumphed over teams like Oyster Bay, Carle Place, Babylon and Penn Yan Academy during their playoff run before defeating South Jefferson 12-5 in the state championship on June 8. In this decisive game, Ryan Reynolds particularly stood out with three goals and three assists, while the defense of Michelle Coles, Rachel Louie, Mackenzie McGraw, Zoe Soskin and goalie Maya Soskin laid the foundation for success. This strong team effort led to Cold Spring Harbor winning their first state championships since winning back-to-back Class C titles in 2018 and 2019.
National ranking and outlook
Cold Spring Harbor is also recognized as a standout team in USA Lacrosse's current rankings, released May 27, 2025. Her name is listed among the “Worthy of Consideration”, which further underlines her remarkable performance in this competition. As the Seahawks continue to work on their 9th efficiency and teamwork, they can look forward to a bright future in the upcoming games as one of the best teams in the New York high school Lakeside lacrosse scene.
