Railway renews pedestrian underpass in Nürtingen – Important information!

Deutsche Bahn has announced a major construction project in Nürtingen that will renew the pedestrian underpass south of Nürtingen train station from August 2025. This measure is part of a broader plan to improve the city's transport infrastructure, which also includes restructuring bus and train services. The work on the pedestrian underpass is to be carried out during the construction period with restrictions on the passage that connects Kirchheimer Straße and Kirchstraße. Despite the great importance of the project, there is criticism of the railway's communication from the city administration and the local council. An online information event is scheduled for Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at 6 p.m. to inform citizens about the construction progress.

In addition to Deutsche Bahn's plans, Nürtingen is being further developed through the IBA'27 project, which has been in implementation since 2020. This project includes the redevelopment of inner-city areas on an area of 8.5 hectares. The urban development competition that led to the realization of this project was decided in 2017, with the winning design coming from the architects Hosoya Schaefer from Zurich and Agence Ter from Karlsruhe. This shows how closely the ideas for improving urban infrastructure are interconnected.

The IBA’27 project aims to improve transport connections, in particular the connection between the regional train and the S-Bahn, which has already been decided. Construction for the entire project is scheduled to begin in 2027, with the concept being awarded in 2024. The design is intended to create various building shapes and possible uses, including ground-level areas for trade, commerce and production.

Sustainability plays a central role here. The Bahnstadt Nürtingen is designed to be energy self-sufficient and resource-saving. In addition, public spaces and quality of stay should be strengthened and a green, traffic-free environment should be created. An important aspect is also the creation of a mobility hub to provide residents, travelers and commuters with improved connections.

Overall, the plans to redesign the pedestrian underpass and the Bahnstadt are in line with the city of Nürtingen's long-term goals of increasing the quality of life of its citizens and improving mobility. It remains to be seen how the construction work will develop and to what extent citizens will be involved in the communication process.
