Holzmaden is blossoming: primary school students design creative wooden steles!
In a creative initiative, the students of the Holzmaden elementary school, led by school principal Ingrid Barth, beautified the area around their town with art projects. Through the collaboration with the artist Sabine Fleischmann, 90 wooden facade steles were created, which will be set up in the center of Holzmaden on July 12th and 13th during the Bätscherfest. This initiative is funded by the state of Baden-Württemberg's “Learning with the Arts” program with 850 euros to enable early cultural education for children and young people, as teckbote.de reports.
The students from all primary school classes used a total of twelve appointments in a studio to create wooden figures. Each grade level received a special motif that is closely linked to the Holzmaden region. The chosen motifs – fish, ammonites, crinoids and belemnites – are all fossils found in this geological area. This connection to local natural history not only promotes creativity, but also awareness of the region's impressive fossil finds.
Artistic support and local partnerships
The design of the steles was undertaken free of charge by carpenter Robert Pfnür, whose generous support was also acknowledged by Mayor Florian Schepp. The construction company Lamparter contributed iron rods to stabilize the steles. As a token of thanks, Pfnür received four copies of the steles, while the remaining steles will be accessible to both visitors and residents of Holzmaden.
The city of Holzmaden is known not only for its current art projects, but also for its important fossil past. The region's famous Posidonia Slate has inspired a variety of scientific studies and discoveries. Work by representatives such as Hiemer E.F. and Seilacher A. provide insight into the rich paleontology that characterizes Holzmaden. For example, the study “Development of the fossil deposit in the Holzmaden Posidonia Slate” was published by holzmaden-fossilien.de, which underlines the importance of the region in science.
Overall, the art project at the Holzmaden elementary school shows how cultural education and local geology can go hand in hand. The active participation of students in the creative process contributes to identification with their hometown and promotes awareness of the environment and science, especially among the younger generation.
