Coim takes over new factory in Texas: entry into polyurethane production!

Coim, a leading provider of polyurethane systems based in Buccinasco, Italy, has acquired a plant under construction from Palmer International in New Boston, Texas. The acquisition, recently announced, covers a 20-hectare site that includes modern logistics infrastructure and newly installed polyol production. Coim plans to significantly expand the production capacity of this facility by mid-2027, representing a significant step in its global growth strategy. Coim USA already has a central manufacturing facility in West Deptford, New Jersey and another facility in Paulsboro, New Jersey, producing a wide range of prepolymers including TDI, MDI and PPDI. These plants also produce saturated polyester and operate a network of regional warehouses to increase efficiency.

The market for polyurethane materials, particularly MDI (Methylene Diphenyl Diisocyanate), plays a crucial role in this dynamic. MDI is an aromatic diisocyanate commonly used in the manufacture of a variety of polyurethane products, including rigid foams, elastomers and coatings. MDI's capabilities, along with increasing demand for energy efficient and sustainable solutions in industries such as construction, automotive and furniture, underpin the growth potential of companies like Coim.

Adaptable solutions for different industries

Covestro's Desmodur® MDI-based systems are another example of the power of MDI in industry. They offer customizable two-component solutions, available in both ether and ester series, that can be optimized using alcohol-based crosslinkers. Polyurethane elastomers made with Desmodur® MDI-MAX prepolymers are known for their superior mechanical and chemical properties.

The advantages of these systems are numerous and impress with their high elongation and elasticity, excellent tear and crack propagation resistance, and exceptional abrasion resistance. In addition, the Desmodur® MAX systems offer long pot lives and short demoulding times, making them attractive options for large thermoforming applications. These properties make MDI and its derivatives essential components of innovative production processes.

Global demand and possible applications

Global markets show increasing demand for MDI across various industries, driven by the unique versatility and performance of MDI-based products. MDI is used in the construction and automotive sectors in particular to produce high-performance polyurethane products. Rigid polyurethane foam produced using MDI finds application in thermal insulation, valued for its energy efficiency.

The properties of MDI not only enable energy-efficient solutions, but also promote the development of materials that remain durable and stable in harsh environments. The various forms of MDI—pure MDI, polymeric MDI (PMDI), and modified MDI—meet diverse industrial needs and are characterized by their strength and durability.

Overall, the focus on sustainability and energy efficiency is expected to further increase demand for MDI-based solutions, giving companies like Coim the opportunity to expand their production capabilities and meet industrial needs.
