Borealis invests over 100 million in Burghausen: the future of polypropylene!

Borealis, a leading Austrian polyolefins company based in Vienna, has announced that the company will invest over 100 million euros in a new production line for high-melt-strength polypropylene (HMS PP) at its Burghausen site. This new plant, scheduled to start production in the second half of 2026, aims to triple the capacity for the polymer under the “Daploy” brand. The aim of this investment is to respond to the increasing demand for advanced, environmentally friendly foam solutions that can be used in various applications, including consumer products, automotive and construction. These materials are characterized by low weight, high mechanical strength and foamability and can be processed in mono-material solutions, which makes them particularly attractive for the recycling process.

Like from PlasticWeb reports, the new production line will play a crucial role in the production of Daploy HMS PP, which meets the requirements of the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive. This should not only increase material efficiency, but also help reduce costs and reduce CO2 emissions.

Expansion and modernization

In addition to the new facility in Burghausen, Borealis also plans to modernize semiconductor composites production facilities in Antwerp (Belgium) and Stenungsund (Sweden). Borouge's site in Ruwais (UAE) is also being expanded to produce cross-linked polyethylene. These measures are part of a comprehensive strategy to promote the manufacturing process of innovative materials and to advance innovation in the area of sustainable plastic solutions.

The investment in Burghausen and the associated measures reflect the growing importance of sustainable materials and recycling technologies in the plastics industry. How on Industry.com emphasizes, digital approaches and alternative raw materials are crucial for resource-saving production. The focus on environmentally friendly solutions will also be clear at the upcoming INDUSTRY.forward EXPO, which will take place from May 15 to 21, 2025. Here, experts will present current developments in the plastics industry on various thematic stages.

Market forecasts and future prospects

With the new PP system, Borealis is positioning itself strategically in a market that is becoming increasingly important. The need for high-performance foams that are recyclable while meeting environmentally friendly requirements is increasing rapidly. Borealis' Executive Vice President Craig Arnold emphasized that the investment offers customers valuable opportunities to design recyclable, foam-based products. This is in line with the recently launched Borcycle products, which promote recycling in the spirit of the circular economy.

The developments at Borealis are not only a response to current market needs, but also an important step towards a more sustainable and progressive industry that is increasingly addressing the challenges of climate change and resource conservation.
