Topping-out ceremony in Göttingen: New research center for human behavior!
The topping-out ceremony for the new Human Cognition and Behavior (HuCaB) research center was celebrated in Göttingen on June 24, 2025. This event marks a significant milestone in the development of an interdisciplinary research center dedicated to the study of human social cognition. The center, located on the University of Göttingen campus, near the Georg Elias Müller Institute for Psychology, is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
The project has a total cost of around 60 million euros and is primarily financed by federal and state funding as part of the “Research Buildings” initiative. The research center will offer space for around 160 workstations and is designed over five floors with a total area of around 3,500 square meters. The planned facilities include modern laboratory rooms, offices, communication zones and event rooms.
Interdisciplinary collaboration
The HuCaB will provide a platform for collaboration between researchers from various disciplines such as psychology, biology and data science. The central goal of the research center is to investigate the perception, processing and integration of complex social signals into human behavior and decisions. In-depth scientific knowledge is gained using the most modern large-scale equipment, including a magnetoencephalograph and a high-performance computing cluster.
Numerous prominent guests were present at the topping-out ceremony. The guests of honor included Frauke Heiligenstadt, member of the state parliament; Rüdiger Eichel, ministerial director; Petra Broistedt, Mayor of Göttingen; as well as the university president Prof. Dr. Axel Schölmerich. Also the HuCaB spokeswoman, Prof. Dr. Anne Schacht, the head of university construction management, Christian Tasch, and the architect Thiemo Pesch were present and took part in the celebrations.
The HuCaB creates an important place for research and teaching that will help expand the boundaries of our understanding of human behavior.
