Rewe in Sielmingen closes: local supply is threatened!
The Rewe market in Sielmingen, Filderstadt, will close in mid-August 2025. According to the information from the Stuttgart News The last day of sales for customers at the branch, which opened in 2010, is August 16, 2025. The decision to close was made for economic reasons, which comes as no surprise given the current market situation.
The closure affects both the food and beverage markets. The residents are disappointed because after the closure only one discount store will remain in Sielmingen, which could significantly restrict local supplies. Mayor Christoph Traub expressed his regret about the decision and described the loss as a significant disadvantage for the community.
Impact of construction work
Although construction work for the S-Bahn extension is affecting access to the market, a Rewe spokeswoman emphasizes that these factors are not the reasons for the closure. It remains unclear what will happen to the location after the Rewe store closes, as the building will be returned to the landlord. The Rewe Group plans to accommodate around 30 affected employees in nearby stores. In Filderstadt there are currently two more Rewe branches in Bonlanden and Bernhausen.
Realignment in retail
Parallel to the closure in Sielmingen, retail as a whole is in a state of upheaval. The Augsburger Allgemeine reports on the approval of the Federal Cartel Office for the takeover of 15 “Mein Real” branches by the Rewe Group. This takeover is part of a realignment following the insolvency of Real, which has been in self-administration since the end of September 2023. In recent years, Real has struggled with economic difficulties.
Of the once 276 branches in 2020, only 62 are now left. The employees at the remaining locations are under pressure; their jobs could be at risk. However, Real has assured that business operations will continue for the time being and salaries will be secured. The future of the branches will largely depend on the successful restructuring.
The 15 locations taken over include Böblingen and Karlsruhe, among others, although the actual takeover depends on agreements with the previous landlords. These developments highlight the challenges that many retail chains are currently facing, not only in the food sector, but also in the fashion and service sectors.
