Eberspächer: uncertain future for jobs in Esslingen and Rhineland-Palatinate
The car supplier Eberspächer has reached an agreement for his headquarters in Esslingen (Baden-Württemberg), which excludes operational terminations by the end of 2027. This regulation benefits around 1,000 employees at the headquarters. Discharge is only possible with both sides. The agreement is a ray of hope in a time when Eberspächer fights with stagnating sales and the switch to electromobility. The new CEO Jörg Steins found that sales are at the level of the previous year after five months, which illustrates the challenges of the industry. The group generated sales of 5.3 billion euros in 2024, which represents a decline compared to the 6.4 billion euros of 2022. Merkur reports .
However, the location is not the same for all locations. While the headquarters in Esslingen is protected by this agreement, there is no job guarantee for other locations of the company. This particularly affects the subsidiaries Eberspächer Catem in Herxheim and the Division Automotive Controls in Landau in the Palatinate, where a total of around 205 jobs are to be mined. Around 150 and around 55 places are to be canceled in Herxheim, while only about 15 positions are affected at the headquarters. bw24. .
challenges of e-mobility
The reasons for the planned job cuts are diverse. The slow development of e-mobility in Germany and Europe as well as a declining demand for electrical vehicles represent significant challenges for Eberspächer. Martin Peters, managing partner of the company, also expressed that statements on workplace development are difficult at other locations. This indicates that the uncertainty about future market development also has a strong influence on personnel management.
In addition, Eberspächer recently built a new work for electric car heaters in Bulgaria, but sold it in 2024. The change towards electric vehicles, especially announced by large customers such as Mercedes-Benz, has started, but not at the pace that was expected by the suppliers. The company faces the challenge of asserting itself in a rapidly changing market in which traditional burners still play a major role. December 31, 2027 represents the deadline for successful transformation for Eberspächer.
Eberspächer is currently under discussions with the works council and the union in order to make the planned job cuts socially acceptable. Even if the group still sees potential at the locations in Rhineland-Palatinate despite the setbacks, it remains to be seen how market development will be shaped in the coming months. The employees have already been informed about the necessary austerity measures and can adjust to a further change in the automotive industry.
