Hang gliders celebrate record year: female power on the heights of Neuffen!
The Hohenneuffen hang gliding and paragliding club has drawn an impressive balance sheet for 2023. In a year that was characterized by success for both the pilots and the passenger flights, the club's women in particular drew attention with their outstanding achievements. This is stated in a report by ntz.de held.
In the women's ranking of the Southwest Cup, Susanne Schmidberger-Brinek secured first place, closely followed by Melanie Tcaciuc. What is particularly impressive is that Schmidberger-Brinek flew over the 100 kilometer mark three times. This shows the enormous potential and ability of female pilots in hang gliding and paragliding.
Success in competition
Another success worth mentioning is that of Heinrich Bretz, who took fifth place in the GS league. His teammate Peter Nägele reached 19th place, while Lorenz Ziegler took 27th place. Klaus Renz, last year's winner of the Dragon League, had to settle for 14th place. After initial difficulties, the club proudly achieved fifth place in the Paragliding Bundesliga.
In parallel to the competitions, important maintenance measures were carried out at the Neuffen Nord launch site. This deployment coincided with the 20th anniversary of the square's opening. To reduce the risk of slipping, rubber mats were laid, a project that was financially supported by the German Hang Glider Association. The gathering with alumni and active members of the DC Hohenneuffen, DGC Weilheim and TV Bissingen clubs also illustrated the community spirit.
A look at the World Cup
The Hang Gliding World Championships in Àger, Spain, which took place from July 13th to 26th, 2025, brought together participants from different countries. dhv.de reports that Markus Baisch brought home the title on the final day of the competition, a great success for him and German aviation. As part of the event, Charlie Jöst produced a film that documents the competitions and captures the atmosphere.
In addition to these international competitions, the club celebrated hosting the Odenwald Cup Flying, a traditional hang gliding and paragliding competition, which took place on July 12th and 13th, 2025. These events foster community among Airmen while providing a platform for showcasing their skills.
Conclusion: A reason to celebrate
With a remarkable number of around 100,000 flights since 2005 without any serious accidents, the Hohenneuffen hang gliding and paragliding club is a prime example of safe and responsible aviation. Even if flight operations at Albtrauf are sometimes overloaded, there is still enough room for celebrations - especially with string sausages and drinks to mark the next 20 years of active aviation.
