Railway construction site between Nürtingen and Metzingen: punctuality in danger!

Deutsche Bahn recently announced extensive work on the route between Nürtingen and Metzingen. These measures, which begin on June 9th and last until December 13th, 2025, aim to improve the punctuality and frequency of trains. The planned work includes the construction of additional signals and the laying of cables. The construction site will be set up at Metzingen train station on Monday, June 9th, which will lead to certain restrictions on rail traffic until the project is completed. Loud NTZ These measures are part of a larger commitment by Deutsche Bahn to optimize the infrastructure.

The work falls within a broader framework of initiatives that Deutsche Bahn has been pursuing since last year. How Traveltopia reports that DB is planning numerous measures to improve punctuality. Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing has particularly advocated for more punctual trains at Christmas time. A major general renovation of the route network is also planned for July 2023, which will take place in addition to the upcoming construction work.

Comprehensive construction program

The construction program includes not only the current work between Nürtingen and Metzingen, but also many smaller measures aimed at short-term improvements. In total, 138 of the 355 planned projects have already been started by the end of 2025. This program, known as “small and medium measures”, aims to increase train punctuality by four percentage points. The DB is investing around one billion euros in this. For 2024, the company is aiming for a punctuality rate of over 71 percent, after 2023 was characterized by a punctuality low, which caused DB high costs.

Philipp Nagel, head of the rail infrastructure division InfraGo, emphasizes the importance of efficient working methods in order to achieve quick results. Ultimately, the effects of these measures should directly benefit passengers. With the additional signals and improved infrastructure, Deutsche Bahn expects that the new work between Nürtingen and Metzingen will also make a significant contribution to the general punctuality of trains, which should be increasingly noticeable in the coming months.
