Para-fencing in Böblingen: Top athletes fight for the Ernst Martin Cup!

SV Böblingen is preparing for the fourth edition of the Ernst Martin Schaible Regio Cup, which will take place on June 28th and 29th, 2025. The competition, which will be held for the first time in the Diezenhalde sports hall, promises exciting duels between the best para fencers from southern Germany. As Stuttgarter Nachrichten reports, the competition will also be accompanied by a prominent guest who will add extra shine should worry.

In the recent past, Böblingen has already shone as a host for the Württemberg Wheelchair Fencing Championships. In mid-May, top-class German and Ukrainian fencers competed here in the disciplines of epee, saber and foil. These events show how active and talented the wheelchair fencing community is in Germany, which includes around 25,000 people. Küchenplaner Magazin emphasizes that the fencing department of SV Böblingen is considered an elite training facility in Baden-Württemberg.

Support and inclusion

SV Böblingen is committed to inclusion in fencing. Since 2005, the club has had a training group for wheelchair users, which enables talented athletes with disabilities to fence together with non-disabled athletes. This makes a decisive contribution to the integration and support of these athletes. Ernst-Martin Schaible, head of DER KREIS, has supported the competition over the years and organized the “Ernst-Martin-Schaible Cup” for the Württemberg Open Championships for the first time in 2023. His support is an important sign for the community.

Among the talented fencers from SV Böblingen, Maurice Schmidt and Tim Widmaier should be mentioned, both of whom are Paralympics participants and German champions. Since 2022, a squad of four Ukrainian refugees has enriched the para-fencing team. These athletes, Artem Manko, Dmitriy Serozhenko, Oleksander Yakovets and Sherii Sheptitskyi, are trained by Romanian coach Gavrila Spiridon and enrich the training and competition community with their experiences and skills.

A look at the future

The Ernst Martin Schaible Regional Cup is not just a competitive event, but a symbol of cohesion and integration in sport. With the support of sponsors like DER KREIS, it is clear that the focus on inclusion and the promotion of para-athletes is becoming more and more important. The upcoming competitions are therefore not only sporting highlights, but also an opportunity to increase awareness of para-sports in society.
