Judo sensation in Sindelfingen: 1900 fighters despite registration stop!
Last weekend, the 22nd VfL Sindelfingen International Judo Tournament took place in the Glass Palace in Sindelfingen, an event that enjoys an excellent reputation in the judo scene. Over 1,900 judoka from 20 nations, including participants from Tunisia, Kyrgyzstan, Ireland and Norway, took part. This once again exceeded the previous record of 1,700 participants from 2024. Despite a registration stop by the organizers, the 1,800 registrations were exceeded, as 1,900 fighters ultimately took to the mat in the competition, reports Southwest Press.
The judo department, led by Simon Kristen, found that organizational capacity had been exhausted. Lena Zein, the department's finance officer, noted that many clubs often do not provide precise figures about registered participants. This makes planning much more difficult. The fights took place on nine mats and included all age groups from U11.
Tournament organization and honorary prizes
The organization of the tournament was a joint effort by over 70 helpers who worked in six working groups. Their work made a crucial contribution to ensuring that the event ran smoothly. A highlight of the tournament is the awarding of a huge trophy to the best club team, the winner of which was announced on Sunday around 5 p.m.
The judo tournament, which took place on Saturday and Sunday, offers judoka from southern Germany and the neighboring countries of Switzerland and Austria an easily accessible competition location. Such events not only help promote the sport of judo, but also strengthen the community among the clubs and athletes.
Overall, the high number of participants once again shows how popular and important the judo tournament in the Glass Palace is for the international judo scene. It remains to be seen whether the organizers will be faced with a registration freeze again next year in order to meet organizational requirements.
