Last help in Merklingen: Course for relatives starts on June 17th!
The Weil der Stadt outpatient hospice service organizes a course on final aid that offers valuable orientation for relatives and close people of dying people. The course aims to offer participants practical assistance and answer questions about the topic of dying. Many people wish to die in their familiar surroundings, but the reality is often different: the majority of people die in hospitals or nursing homes. The course imparts knowledge that makes it easier for participants to support seriously ill and dying people.
The course content is varied and covers both the normality of dying as a part of life and important legal aspects such as living wills and health care powers of attorney. Another important point is the possible discomfort in the dying process and how to alleviate it, as well as the various options for saying goodbye. The next date for the course is June 17, 2025, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., at Riquewihrstr. 5 in Merklingen. The cost is 10 euros and registration is required by calling 07033/80405.
Course content and target group
The course topics are based on the needs of the participants, who are often unsure how they can support the dying in their final hours. According to hospiz-aktuell.de, the courses are designed for laypeople and are aimed particularly at relatives. These are intended to gain security and orientation when accompanying dying people. The courses offer, among other things, knowledge about physical, psychological, social and existential needs that can arise in the process of dying. Particular emphasis is placed on the importance of care and recognizing signs of the end of life.
The Last Aid courses are now available in various regions and have been designed in multiple languages to appeal to a wide audience. In Berlin, for example, courses are also offered in Arabic, Turkish, Ukrainian, Vietnamese and Kurdish to meet different cultural needs.
The last aid initiative is in the context of a social change in which dying is increasingly being pushed out of public consciousness. It is therefore all the more important to create appropriate offers to reduce fears and promote self-determined dying. The Weil der Stadt outpatient hospice service course is a step in this direction and contributes to improving the quality of support in the dying process.
