Accident escape in Holzgerlingen: cyclist ignores witnesses and flees!
On May 29, 2025, an accident occurred in Holzgerlingen, which once again draws attention to the dangers in road traffic. At around 4:10 p.m., an unknown cyclist with a black mountain bike crashed into a VW car parked on the side of the road on Turmstrasse in the direction of Gartenstrasse. After the collision, the cyclist fell, but got up and drove away without caring about the damage caused. The damage to the vehicle is estimated at around 2,500 euros.
Several witnesses who observed the incident tried to speak to the cyclist, but he ignored them and continued his journey. The Böblingen police have now started an investigation and are asking the public for information about the identity of the cyclist. Witnesses can call 07031 13-2500 or email boeblingen.prev@polizei.bwl.de to provide further information.
Safety situation for cyclists
Unfortunately, accidents like those in Holzgerlingen are no exception. According to tagesschau.de, a total of 441 cyclists died in road traffic in 2024. This is 33 fewer than in 2023, but an increase compared to previous years. One in six road traffic fatalities was on a bicycle. What is striking is that 70.7 percent of the 92,882 bicycle accidents with personal injuries were collisions with cars. Drivers were primarily to blame for these accidents in 75.3 percent of cases.
Cyclists aged 65 and over are particularly at risk. Almost two thirds of fatally injured cyclists were in this age group, highlighting the need for greater awareness and safety on the roads. When it comes to e-bikes, the proportion of seniors affected is even higher, which indicates a significant increase in e-bike users and their specific risks.
Current incidents and general statistics make it clear that measures to improve road safety for cyclists are essential. Both police and the public must work together to make roads safer and prevent similar accidents in the future.
