Fraud phone call: Senior women in the Böblingen district lose thousands of euros!
On June 11, 2025, two women in the Böblingen district fell victim to unscrupulous fraudsters who posed as police officers over the phone. A 70-year-old senior citizen from Schönaich was contacted by a caller who claimed that her daughter-in-law was involved in a fatal traffic accident. In order to avert her daughter's alleged imprisonment, the elderly woman transferred several thousand euros to a foreign account, such as [Stuttgarter News](https://www.stuttgarter-nachrichten.de/content.schockrufe-im-kreis-boeblingen-seniorin-ueberweist- Thousande-euro-an-betrueger.4c688dfd-a605-4e2a-a2eb-d852bdebc588.html) reported.
Also on the same day, a 75-year-old senior woman from Holzgerlingen received a similar call. Here the fraudsters posed as police officers and prosecutors and claimed that their son had caused a fatal accident. In order to avoid pre-trial detention, they demanded a bail of 55,000 euros. When an alleged court messenger appeared at the door to hand over the bail, the elderly woman demanded that the handover be carried out in the presence of the police. The fraudster then left the location and the woman filed a report.
The danger of shock calls
This type of fraud, known as a “shock call,” is a serious problem that occurs again and again, as the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) explained in a warning message dated May 24, 2023. The perpetrators often pose as close relatives or government institutions and put pressure on victims to provide financial support, often under the pretext that they are in need or that a crime has occurred. In extreme cases, amounts of up to 100,000 euros are requested.
The BKA points out that several accomplices often work together and the callers take turns in a conversation. To gain trust, they often speak in a whiny voice. In addition, pick-ups appear on site or the victims are lured to handover locations. In order to protect yourself against this fraud, the BKA recommends not to respond to the demands, not to reveal any personal information and, if in doubt, to contact relatives using known telephone numbers.
Prevention measures and offers of help
In the event of such a call, those affected should contact the local police station immediately. In addition, the “WEISSER RING” offers help for victims of such fraud, which can be reached on 116 006. The BKA and the police offer comprehensive information about prevention on their websites.
The incidents in the Böblingen district should be understood as an urgent warning. The police are calling on all citizens to be vigilant and advise them to act quickly if they suspect something so as not to become a victim of this perfidious scam.
