Herrenberg celebrates 87 volunteers: an evening full of commitment and music!
On May 22, 2025, the honorable evening for civic engagement took place in Herrenberg, honoring the achievements of 87 committed citizens. Mayor Nico Reith presented the honorees with official certificates as a sign of recognition for their many years of commitment to the community. The event took place in the “Mauerwerk” and, in addition to a festive atmosphere, also offered musical accompaniment by the women’s quartet “4-leaf clover” under the direction of Marianne Aicher.
The recipients have been involved in a variety of areas for at least a decade. What is particularly striking is that 23 of the honorees are under 27 years old and are actively involved in various projects, such as youth groups, cultural events and digital skills initiatives. The spectrum of commitment extends from music and sports clubs to social projects and environmental and climate protection initiatives.
Diversity of engagement
What is particularly noteworthy is that some of those honored have taken on responsibility in management positions and created contact points for people in need. After the award, those present had the opportunity to have a personal conversation and share their experiences. This underlines the considerable diversity of voluntary work in Herrenberg, which continues to be an important part of the city's social fabric.
In Herrenberg, active participation in projects is supported by offers from the city administration. Citizen project groups can benefit from financial support for charitable projects and receive information on important topics relating to club life. They also have free rooms available, which makes it much easier to get involved in the participatory city. Through the city's website, committed people have access to various support offers that support them in their work.
Volunteering in a social context
The topic of volunteering has become more important in federal politics since the late 1990s. A definition of volunteer work includes several aspects: These are voluntary, common good activities that are generally not designed for material gain. One of the key points is that volunteers are typically active members in their communities and have above-average income and high levels of education.
According to the 2014 volunteer survey, every second adult in Germany worked on a voluntary basis. Differences in gender distribution are particularly noteworthy: 41.5% of women and 45.7% of men are involved. The motives for commitment are usually broader, with the focus on the common good standing out as the most important motive.
The event in Herrenberg impressively shows how civic engagement can contribute to identity formation and the creation of social relationships. Promoting volunteer work not only requires recognition, but also optimal conditions to offer those involved a further incentive and to support the diversity of projects.
