Measles alarm in Upper Bavaria: urgently check health protection!
In the city of Waldkraiburg, Upper Bavaria, a measles infection is currently being reported at a secondary school. One student is considered a contact person and is therefore staying at home for the time being. The parents of the affected students were informed immediately to prevent the virus from spreading further. However, tracing the contacts is challenging because the subject area principle makes it difficult to trace who was in contact with the infected student. The health department has already taken the necessary measures and warns that further cases may be expected in the region.
Against this background, the health department recommends that vaccination protection against measles be urgently checked. A double vaccination offers reliable protection, especially since almost every contact with the virus without vaccination leads to infection. If you have symptoms such as fever, cough, runny nose, conjunctivitis and whitish spots in the mouth, those affected should contact their family doctor or pediatrician by telephone and not go to the practice directly. The characteristic rash usually appears a few days after the first symptoms.
Growing measles cases in the district
In addition to the case in Waldkraiburg, there were already six confirmed cases of measles in Lower Bavaria after a festival in Jandelsbrunn. Those affected had either taken part in the festival themselves or had contact with someone who was there. The Mühldorf a. Health Department Inn points out that people born before 1970 are likely to have immunity from a previous illness. In order to protect particularly the younger and unvaccinated people in the population, such as babies in their first year of life, a high level of herd immunity is required.
The vast majority of cases are transmitted through respiratory droplets. Many people are unaware of the risk of infection, which promotes the spread of the virus and makes urgent protective measures necessary. The Bavarian State Office for Health and Food Safety urges people to check their vaccination status in order to prevent the return of measles in the region.
Not only can measles cause serious health complications, but it can also weaken the immune system. In extreme cases, they can even be fatal, and there is no specific antiviral therapy for the disease. Therefore, preventative vaccination is of great importance to protect both yourself and others.
