Last Saturday, two serious traffic accidents occurred in the canton of Uri, which caused a stir. The first accident happened shortly before 10:25 a.m. on the Furkastrasse between Andermatt and Realp, when a sports car crashed into the Reuss after an overtaking maneuver.
A driver from Nidwalden was previously driving his car when he wanted to overtake another vehicle. A driver of a sports car with English license plates behind also tried to overtake. This resulted in a collision with the rear of the Nidwalden vehicle, which then crashed into the curb. The sports car lost control and ended up crashing into the Reuss riverbed, where the car landed on its roof, badly damaged.
Minor injuries and extensive rescue efforts
The two occupants of the sports car were able to free themselves, but suffered minor injuries and were taken by Rega to the Uri Cantonal Hospital. The sports car was a total loss, while the Nidwalden vehicle had material damage amounting to several thousand francs. The Uri cantonal police began investigating the causes of the accident. In addition to Rega, the Andermatt and Hospental fire departments, a first responder and a local towing company were also on duty.
The second accident occurred shortly after 12:30 p.m. in the Schöllenen, in the direction of Göschenen. A motorcyclist with Zurich license plates was driving behind an Aargau passenger car when both vehicles had to stop due to heavy traffic. However, a following Dutch passenger car collided with the motorcycle too late, resulting in a violent impact. The motorcycle driver was thrown onto the road due to the impact and sustained significant injuries. He was also taken to the Uri Cantonal Hospital. The material damage to the vehicles involved amounted to a total of over 30,000 francs.
Previous accidents and their consequences
These two accidents are not the only tragic events on Uri's roads recently. Another serious accident occurred on Sunday, August 10, 2025, when a motorcyclist with a German license plate fell near Spiringen after a driver with a Uri license plate blocked the way while turning. The motorcyclist also suffered significant injuries.
Another incident took place on Monday, August 11, 2025, when a driver with German license plates crashed into several guardrails on the A2 motorway. Here, too, there were injuries and high property damage of around 70,000 francs. The highway was closed for about an hour while the rescue effort took place.
