Drastic decisions in the Uri district administrator: Social welfare law was resoundingly rejected!
On June 18, 2025, an important meeting of the Uri District Administrator took place, at which various topics of high relevance were discussed. The new proposals, the elections, a package of measures and other points were discussed in detail. The focus was particularly on the motion to revise the almost thirty-year-old social assistance law in the canton of Uri, which was submitted by Hans Ruedi Zgraggen (Mitte, Flüelen). This revision of the law was initiated by the center and supported by the FDP and SVP. With a narrow result of 50.7% of the votes, the citizens of Uri rejected the new social welfare law, which caused great confusion among supporters. Uri newspaper reported that voter turnout was around 36%.
The voting result was relatively close with 4,670 yes votes compared to 4,806 no votes. The opponents, consisting of the SP, the Greens and the GLP, had vehemently fought the proposal, while supporters such as Flavio Gisler (center) focused on the voluntary forfeiture of assets as a crucial point. Jonas Bissig (SP Uri) was surprised by the outcome and referred to his party's arguments, which may have made the difference.
Newly elected district president and further election results
Elections were also held during the meeting. Ruedi Cathry (FDP, Schattdorf) was elected as the new district president, while Toni Brand (independent, Silenen) was sworn in as a new member. This change in the political landscape could influence future decisions.
Another central topic of the meeting was the approval of a loan of 250,000 francs for the construction of a lift at the cantonal train station in Altdorf. This could sustainably improve transport connections and accessibility in the canton of Uri.
Package of measures to improve the budget
An important item on the agenda was a package of measures to improve the financial budget of the canton of Uri. The decision was made in favor of one of four compromises that were sought to stabilize the financial situation. The reports on the New Regional Policy (NRP) were approved unanimously, with the district administrators expressing positive feedback on the measures taken so far.
In addition, the report of the State Political Commission on the supervisory complaint against the government council regarding the tendering procedure for seafill was noted. In his answer to the interpellation regarding workplaces for learners, Noel Baumann (GLP, Altdorf) saw no need for action because existing places were not being fully used.
The developments in the canton of Uri clearly show that the political landscape is in transition. The feedback on the various proposals and votes demonstrates citizens' interest in future decisions, which will affect not only social welfare policy, but also the general financial situation of the canton. SRF also reports that the government councilor Christian Arnold considers the current social welfare law to be no longer up to date and is planning a comprehensive analysis in order to develop a new template that can attract a majority.
